CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Sally pumped her arms and breathed deeply. She concentrated on running as fast as she could, but she couldn’t catch up to James, who was in great shape for a man his age. It didn’t help that she only took a few steps at a time without slipping and sliding across the snow. Sally kept glancing back, watching the snowmobiles getting closer, hearing the whine of their engines getting louder. She was exhausted and panicked and knew there was no point of running because the snowmobiles were going to—

She slipped again, but this time couldn’t maintain her balance. She hit down hard, her head smashing into the compact snow, her vision momentarily flashing to black. Sally lay on her back and stared straight up at the sky, her brain jarred. For a moment, the whining engines and howling wind faded into the distance, as did every worry in her mind. The Great Blue Above was beautiful, even if it was covered with clouds, even if her view was obscured by snow that fell so quietly. . . so peacefully. . .

A blur of movement flashed among the clouds, disappearing almost as soon as she’d spotted it. Two words instantly cut through the haze in her mind, snapping her back to reality. She still ignored the approaching enemies and remained on her back, searching for the blur, her eyes having trouble focusing longer than a few seconds at a time. She thought she spotted it again when James stepped into her view, grabbing her arm to yank her up.

“This isn’t the time for rest,” James said, wrapping his arm around Sally’s waist to drag her forward. “Come on, you need to help.”

Sally’s steps were clumsy, but she tried to move one foot after the other. She kept staring up and even pointed toward the clouds.

“Sky People?”

James kept looking forward, but shook his head as he pulled her along. “Love told me he’s the only one left.”

Sally shook her head and pull free from his grip. “I know what’s up there. I know what I—”

“Don’t have time for this,” James snapped. “Stay here if you want.”

He hurried forward without her, but didn’t make it far before the first snowmobile reached them, circling around to cut them off. Sally stopped right away and took a deep breath. James started to rush in another direction but thought better of it when the snowmobiler fired his weapon and a puff of snow popped at James’ feet. James slowly backed his way toward Sally, the two of them raising their hands in surrender.

The two snowmobilers leapt off of their vehicles and slowly approached. They wore matching helmets covering and heavy snowsuits, though one of them was covered in black scorch marks. Both men held identical weapons, but only the burned man had his raised. When Moretti removed his helmet, he wore a sadistic grin beneath; Kap didn’t appear nearly so pleased.

“Take another step and you die,” Moretti growled, his voice strained.

“Who are you?” Sally asked.
